Navigating the Bible is an impressive site, part of which aims to teach the Hebrew recitation of the Torah (particularly for Bar/Bat Mitzvah). Included are: the Pentateuch, Torah Portions, Haftarot, and Blessings. The English text has a commentary, the Hebrew text has both a transliteration and a scroll image of each portion with a RealAudio chanting of the text. There is also an interesting section on the performance of the Torah and Haftarot (including a Java-based tutorial).

ATLASES & ARCHEOLOGY

Bible events happened in historical times and geographical places--part of the incarnational nature of the faith as well as scholarly influence (and popular fascination) with the artifacts of 19th-20th century empiricism! Much cartography, however, is based on interpretations of texts (which may not be historically or geographically precise, intentionally or unintentionally) as well as the best of budding science available to map-makers and archeologists in their day. Therefore, JCBL has a breadth of atlases spanning the last century, most held in Reference and also online, and Reference has several indexes to archeological discussions, much of which can be found more fully expounded in circulation books, articles in specialized journals on archeology as well as online.

Bibliographies

Good for tracking what studies have already been done in an area of interest.  Caution: most bibliographies are quite out of date and can be supplemented through newer works-cited lists in more up to date publications or through online database searches.  Nonetheless the thorough investigator  always checks the full chronology of scholarship, especially becoming familiar with the most frequently cited "classic" studies.

A Concordance to the Septuagint and the Other Greek Versions of the Old Testament: Including the Apocryphal Books.(Edwin Hatch and Henry Redpath; assisted by other scholars. Grand Rapids, Mich.: Baker, 1983.)
REF BS1122 H3 1975
"The aim of this work was to present a complete concordance to the Greek OT, the LXX, including its text of deuterocanonical and aprocryphal books, and to other Greek versions contained in the Hexapla. The work is based on the uncial mss. A, B, S, and the Sixtine edition of R (1587 [with corrections of its obvious mistakes and blunders]). The Hebrew equivalents of the Greek word are numbered and each entry is followed by a number, in an attempt to indicate the relation. Proper names are separately presented, and a reverse index gives the Greek equivalents of Hebrew words. This work is indispensable for the study of the Bible, but it must be used with caution. The evidence is limited to four mss.; the Hebrew-Greek equivalences must always be checked. Once the references are found, they should then be checked in the critical editions of the LXX for possible variants. An important tool for the use of this concordance is found in E. Camilo dos Santos, An Expanded Hebrew Index for the Hatch-Redpath Concordance to the Septuagint (Jerusalem: Dugith, 1973). This index places all the Greek equivalents alongside the Semitic words that are listed in alphabetical order."  Fitzmyer

Synopsis Quattuor Evangeliorum: Locis Parallelis Evangeliorum Apocryphorum et Patrum Adhibitis. edidit Kurt Aland. Ed. 13 rev. Stuttgart: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft, 1985.
REF  BS2560 A2 1985
"The text of each of the four Gospels is set out in parallel columns in its continuity, and relevant parallels from the other Gospels are given each time they are called for. The result is that the Synopsis is free of any particular theory of source-criticism. Relevant parallels from all parts of the NT, from NT apocrypha, and from patristic writers are cited as occasion offers. The text used is that on N-A26, and the sigla are taken over from N-A26. In the 4th ed. (1967) evidence from 68 uncials not previously used was introduced; from still others in the 9th ed. The apparatus criticus consequently is full. In the 13th ed., the apparatus has been completely reorganized to cope with all the added material, but the rest of the page layout remains the same. Appendices contain the Gospel of Thomas (translated into Latin [by G. Garitte], German [by E. Haenchen], and English [by B.M. Metzger]); the testimony of ancient patristic writers about the origin of the gospel tradition; and tables of parallel passages." Fitzmyer

(Ed. Kurt Aland. 6th completely rev. ed. [Stuttgart]: United Bible Societies, 1983.)
REF BS2560 A2 A35 1983
"The Greek part of this diglot edition agrees exactly with the comprehensive edition in its structure, arrangement of parallel texts, and critical apparatus. The last has even been enlarged by the addition of newly discovered papyri and uncials. Omitted are the appendices (the Gospel of Thomas and the witnesses of the early Church Fathers concerning the origin of the Gospels) and the additions to the individual pericopes from the apocryphal Gospels and the Church Fathers. The apparatus criticus of the English page includes variant readings in the AV, American and English RV, and the Catholic RSV."Fitzmyer

Greek Lexicons

A Greek-English Lexicon. (Henry George Liddell, and Robert Scott, Oxford: At the Clarendon Press; New York: Oxford University Press, 1996.)
REF PA445.E5 L6 1968  (1996 EDITION IN PROCESS)
"This excellent lexicon, mainly devoted to classical Greek, frequently includes references to the LXX and the NT. It is especially useful for tracing the early history of a NT word or for determining its etymology." Fitzmyer
"The Greek-English Lexicon of Liddell and Scott was first published in 1843 ... it has gone through nine editions, the last being augmented by a Supplement published in 1968 ... Much new material has become available since the publication of the first Supplement and the incorporation of this is again the main aim of the new Supplement."--Pref.

Greek-English Lexicon. A Supplement.  (Henry G. Liddell, Robert Scott, H. Stuart Jones; edited by E.A. Barber with the assistance of P. Maas, M. Scheller and M.L. West. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1968. )
REF PA445 E5 L6 1996 Suppl.
A supplement to the Liddell and Scott, A Greek-English Lexicon "which sought to take account of new material in the publications of more recently discovered inscriptions and papyrus texts or new critical editions. It includes the "addenda et corrigenda" to the two main volumes [bound in one volume], accumulated since 1940. New word entries are prefixed with a superscript x."  Fitzmyer

REF PA881.B413 1979
The second English edition has utilized much of the new material that Bauer introduced into his 5th ed. and added some other material gathered by the present editors. The Bauer lexicon's "value lies in the attempt to give succinctly the history of the Greek word, indicating its terminus a quo in Greek literature, its use in the LXX, papyri, and later Greek, as well as the NT occurrences themselves. Abundant bibliographical references to articles and books on the word concerned are also supplied."Fitzmyer

words arranged alphabetically, not by verbal roots. "It takes full advantage of the enormous advances that have been made in Semitic linguistics since the publication of older dictionares like Gesenius and Brown-Driver-Briggs." [preface]

A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament: with an Appendix Containing the Biblical Aramaic, Based on the Lexicon of William Gesenius as Translated by Edward Robinson. Edited with constant reference to the Thesaurus of Gesenius as completed by E. Rodiger, and with authorized use of the latest German editions of Gesenius's Handwörterbuch über das Alte Testament by Francis Brown with the cooperation of S.R. Driver and Charles A. Briggs. (1957, 1978, 1996 printings) [BDB]
REF  PJ4833 G4713 1955
"The dictionary includes both Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic; words are not arranged alphabetically, but according to roots, sometimes more putative than real. Though the etymologies usually need scrutiny and many translations must now be corrected, this work is still valuable for its abundance of references to biblical passages and its listing of Hebrew or Aramaic idioms, which more modern lexica often curtail. For the corrected impression, G.R. Driver inserted only those corrections which could be made without resetting the sheets. This lexicon was based on an English translation of one by W. Gesenius, which in later editions has been a valuable reference tool. BDB has been reissued: The New Brown-Driver-Briggs-Gesenius Hebrew and English Lexicon with an Appendix Containing the Biblical Aramaic (Peabody, MA: Hendrickson, 1979). The Addenda and Corrigenda grouped previously in an appendix have been moved to the bottom margin of pages to which they refer. The Hebrew or Aramaic words have been coded to the numbering system of Strong's Concordance, and an important index has been added. All of this makes this old lexicon a still valuable tool for study." Fitzmyer

Parsing Guides      Word Books        Interlinear Bibles

These "crutches" should not be relied on or used as a cheap substitute for a student's deeper study and grasp of the biblical languages.  They can be useful as double-checks or as a last resort to "possible diagnosis" of a form or meaning.  The exegete should return again to the text itself to determine contextual word usage and nuance, including irony and sarcasm that may undercut the "dictionary meaning" of a term.

The Bible emerged from rich socio-theological literary environs.  Acquaintance with the writings of sectarians and neighboring cultures can illuminate the canonical scriptures through parallel words and thought patterns (such as "covenant") and by contrast (such as gnosticism's idea of "the logos not made flesh").

REF DS42 P832 1969

Ancient Near Eastern Texts Relating to the Old Testament. (James Bennett Pritchard, Translators and annotators: W. F. Albright [and others] 3rd ed., with supplement. Princeton, N. J. Princeton University Press, 1969.) [ANET]
REF BS1180 P83 1969
"This valuable collection of ancient Near Eastern texts in translation first appeared in 1950. An expanded 2nd ed. was put out in 1955 (along with a fascicle containing the added texts, New Material from the Second, Revised Edition of Ancient Near Eastern Texts...; this fascicle made it possible to continue to use the fires edition). The third edition (1969) not only contains further new material but offers translations of the existing texts that have been revised; when the additions were such that they could not be fitted into the existing space in the book's format, they were gathered in a supplementary section ... . The original texts are selections from Egyptian, Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittite, Ugaritic, South Arabic, Canaanite, and Aramaic documents, translated by experts in each field. The selections are grouped according to literary form: (1) myths, epics, legends; (2) legal texts (now including Akkadian treaties from Syria and Assyria); (3) historical texts; (4) rituals, incantations, and descriptions of festivals; (5) hymns and prayers; (6) didactic and wisdom literature; (7) lamentations (8) secular songs and poems; (9) letters; (10) miscellaneous texts; and (11) supplement (the addenda which would not fit into existing space). The work is a real library of ancient Near Eastern literature, which is indispensable in the study of the OT." Fitzmyer

REF DS42 .P833
"This volume supplies the added materials in the 3rd. ed. of ANET, which enables one to use the older editions of ANET and ANEP; 55 new pages of material are added to the latter. The new materials are from more recently excavated sites in Palestine, Syria, Jordan, and Iraq. They expand almost every section of the original edition; and some of the translations are revised forms of what is found in earlier editions." Fitzmyer

A Concordance to the Septuagint and the Other Greek Versions of the Old Testament: Including the Apocryphal Books. (Edwin Hatch and Henry Redpath; assisted by other scholars.

Introductions & Histories in Reference

As the rubric implies, these works simply introduce the history and any issues lying just behind a text.  While more detailed, usually, than dictionary and encyclopedias, these works are less engaged with information derived from the biblical texts themselves such as a good commentary might describe.  However, general overviews are useful to grasp the peculiar setting of a scripture, and 'Introductions and Histories' provide this possibility.  Learn to use the indexes in the back of each volume to locate specific scriptural references and where a text might fit in the broad sweep of Israel and the Church, both chronologically and ideologically.
Nota bene: most Intros and Histories (no matter how objective and factual) betray some confessional leaning or adherence to sets of "facts" on the part of the author(s).  Comparison between volumes can prove interesting.

Codex Amiatinus: from

©Elizabeth Howie, Univ. of North Carolina:  www.unc.edu/courses/art111/celtic/catalogue/manuscripts/CoAm.html

©Laurentian Library, Codex Amiatinus, where the Prophet Ezra mends and reads the refound texts of the Bible, in accord with the prophecy of the Prophetess Huldah: 2 Chronicles 34.14-33; recounted: Ezra 7.1-10; 10.6-15; Nehemiah 8.1-13-30. The portrait is doubly that of Ezra and of Cassiodorus who made the Codex Grandior, brought from Vivarium in Italy to Jarrow in England and there copied by Coelfrith to be brought back to Italy, who died on the journey, its exemplar in Northumberland destroyed by Vikings.  [City and Book Websites © Julia Bolton Holloway (juliana@tin.it, Biblioteca e Bottega Fioretta Mazzei, Piazzale Donatello 38, 50132 FIRENZE, ITALY), 1997-2001] www.umilta.net/congress.html
