[female characters and symbols and the condition of women more generally]. . . a final essay is devoted to feminist hermeneutics. . . ." Preface

The IVP women's Bible commentary / edited by Catherine Clark Kroeger & Mary J. Evans. : Downers Grove, Ill. InterVarsity Press, 2002.
REF BS521.4 .I97 2002

"A different kind of commentary": succinct verse by verse statements with longer "In Focus" "Insight" "In Depth" "In Life" "In Context" "In Comparison" "In Person" and "In Time" features that describe or link to more detailed information. While "thematically" evangelical, it reflects solid critical methods without being doctrinal.

Still a significant ecumenical critical commentary of note, although becoming dated.  Authors are scholarly and religiously insightful and able to communicate. The New Interpreter's Bible  Nashville: Abingdon Press, c1994-
REF BS491.2 .N484 1994
General articles & introduction, commentary, & reflections for each book of the Bible, including the Apocryphal/Deuterocanonical books.  Full texts and critical notes of the New International Version and the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible in parallel columns. Commentary and reflections are written by the same author and are intended to relate. Scholarship is fresh, methodology varied across historical and literary approaches. The "general articles" provide rich summaries of recent scholarship and exegetical issues.

Anchor Bible--Garden City, N.Y. : Doubleday,   31 VOLUMES
REF BS192.2.A1 1964 .G3
A project of Protestant, Catholic and Jewish scholars. Offers new translations of the books of the Bible with extensive commentary. Uneven, but some valuable studies.  "Several . . . commentaries receive high commendation.  The chief strength lies in the excellent new translations. Some are quite unusable." (Childs) Most serve well as a supplemental confirmation, through the fresh translations and sparse comments, of other scholars' insights or the student's own ideas.

Word biblical commentary, Dallas, Tex.: Word Books, c1987-1994.  45 VOLUMES
REF BS491.2 .W67 1982
New scholarship from a conservative perspective that is also informed by the "scientific" inquiry of historical-literary methods. Volumes tend to be uniform in size--more brief than extensive--and written for the informed, but general audience. "The broad stance of our contributors can rightly be called evangelical [] in its positive, historic sense of a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation, and to the truth and power of the Christian gospel." Each contributor presents a new translation; comments and textual notes are found in separate units as are Form/Structure/Setting and Bibliography.

REF BS 491. J3 1997 3 VOL
A photo reproduction: Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown was originally published in six volumes from 1864-1870 for a Reformed Evangelical audience. Faussett was a clergyman in the Church of England, Jamieson and Brown were Presbyterians. It was highly recommended by Charles Spurgeon, a Baptist. Brown was a post-millenialist, Faussett was a premillenialist. Robert Jamieson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on January 3, 1802, the son of a baker. A. R. Fausset was born in County Fermaugh, Ireland on October 13, 1821 the son of a clergyman. David Brown was born in Aberdeen, Scotland August 17, 1803.

The Interpreter's Bible / [Editorial board: George Arthur Buttrick, commentary editor, and others.] New York: Abingdon Press, c1951-57.
REF BS491.2 .I55
The Holy Scriptures in the King James and Revised Standard versions with general articles and introduction, exegesis, exposition for each book of the Bible .  "Began to appear in 1952, with G. A. Buttrick as editor of the commentary.  The series, covering both Testaments, is complete in twelve volumes.  For each biblical book, the King James and RSV translations are printed in parallel columns; thee are extensive introductions and commentaries, and sections of homiletic exposition; over half of Vol. 1 and Vol. 7 is devoted to extensive essays on OT and NT background.  Though the contributions vary considerably in quality and view point, one will still find a good deal of excellent material in these volumes.  The biblical student can profitably ignore the expositions." (Fitzmyer)  "The division between exegesis and exposition was a fundamental error and destroys the inner dynamic of serious theological reflection." (Childs)

The International Critical Commentary on the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. Edinburgh : T. & T. Clark, 1930
REF BS491 .I6
Earlier 20th century textual and source critical scholarship of the highest order. An excellent resource for questions about the "original" reading of the text in the Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. The commentary itself reflects a distanced academic (predominantly British) attitude toward the Bible which still holds credible moments of insight both scholarly and social.

The Biblical Museum : a collection of notes, explanatory, homiletic, and illustrative, on the Holy Scriptures, especially designed for the use of ministers, Bible students, and Sunday-school teachers / by James Comper Gray.
REF BS491 .G79
A late nineteenth century commentary on the scriptures from a pedagogical (topical) perspective. Each chapter of the Bible begins with basic etymologies for names and keywords in the passage followered by an outline of the text (with trajectories to the Gospels whenever possible). Next come anecdotal excurses on historical and legendary figures to teach "life's lessons" which may only topically connect with the scripture at hand. Another feature is the marginalia with scholarly quotations and scriptural links to other passages. Hardly good for serious study (the etymologies are suspect and the insights quite dated), although the occasional anecdote and quotation may prove useful for sermon material or teaching.

The Expositor's Bible commentary : with the New international version of the Holy Bible / general editor, Frank E. Gaebelein; associate editor, J.D. Douglas; consulting editors: Walter C. Kaiser, Jr. [et  al.]. Grand Rapids: Zondervan Pub. House, c1976-c1992.  Grand Rapids: Zondervan Pub. House, c1976-c1992.12 VOLUMES
REF BS491.2 .E96
"Written . . . by expositors for expositors . . . Its stance is that of a scholarly evangelicalism committed to the divine inspiration, complete trustworthiness, and full authority of the Bible."preface Solid, conservative scholarship by top-ranked academics. The general articles in volume one give a fair summary-review of the history of Biblical study and its struggle in recent centuries that actually accommodates the "liberal camp" from an evangelical perspective.

Biblical commentary on the Old Testament / by C.F. Keil and F. Delitzsch. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1951-1956.  VOLUMES 1-25.
REF BS 1154 .K414
"Early 20th century conservative apologist for biblical integrity with a solid reputation for scholarship." Fed by an older Germanic pietism, it remains a close textual reading of widespread influence, which in later additions acknowledged in the preface the dual authorship of Isaiah.

The Great texts of the Bible / edited by James Hastings. New York: Scribner's; Edinburgh: T. & T. Clark , 1910-1915,  20 VOLUMES

 REF BS491 .H3
"The purpose of these volumes is to direct attention to the value for the pulpit of the great texts of the Bible, and to offer a exposition of these texts, illustrated throughout."--Pref. to Isaiah.  "Literature" at beginning of chapters.

Calvin's commentaries--Grand Rapids, Mich. : Baker Books, 1979,   22 VOLUMES
REF BS485 .C35 1979
Translated from the original Latin, and compared with the French edition. Title of each volume on spine. Reprint. Originally printed for the Calvin Translation Society, Edinburgh. The "prince of expositors," this 16th century reformer provides good insight into the reading of the text as a whole albeit tinged with his own contemporary issues and agenda. Any history of interpretations should include Calvin, especially in a "Presbyterian" exegesis.

The Broadman Bible commentary / general editor, Clifton J. Allen.   Nashville : Broadman Press,  c1969-1972.  12 VOLUMES

The Speaker's Bible / edited by James Hastings, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1961-1963.  36 VOLUMES
REF BS491.5 .S73 1961
Not an actual translation, but "sermons" preserving the "thought" rather than the "expression" of the Bible. "So much, however, has been done in the way of condensing, re-arranging, re-writing, adding to, and illustrating, that the sources have not as a rule been given."

Lange's Commentary on the Holy Scriptures, critical, doctrinal and homiletical / [edited] by John Peter Lange  Grand Rapids: Zondervan Pub. House, English. 195? .
REF BS494 .T4313 1950Z
Translation of Theologisch-homiletisches Bibelwerk. Reprint of the 1865-1879 ed. translated from the German, and edited, with additions, by Philip Schaff.
From latter half of 19th century, together with Keil-Delitzsch, articulates the scholarly, but pietistic struggle with science and critical methodology. A good source for older styled word study that reads the text closely, although through a doctrinal lens.
