Levels of Inquiry  after engaging the text itself with appropriate language helps.

            Encyclopedic/dictionary—topical, overview, summary

Commentary—another point of view with methodological and/or theological bias, hopefully faithful to the text and to past scholarship, bibliographic, immediately dated.

Monographs: historical and/or topical—like the commentary, often more specific than summary, but selectively expository. As with commentaries, use for dialogue, not authority.

Articles: (journals & polygraphs) more detailed and pointed, often technical and experimental.  The stuff from which future commentaries, theologies and history monographs are shaped with sifting, rebuttal and refinement.
